Hey, so. I started a thing with some other officials of my league.

So, uh, we’re going to ECDX, right? And we’re going, not as officials, but to spectate—because, after all, we want to actually WATCH some derby every once in a while.

And one of our friends came in hot pants as a sign of solidarity. And what’s better than a cold beer during ECDX? I ask you.

Anyway. We have created our own spectator team. Called Hot Pants, Cold Beer. Team HPCB is dedicated to wearing hot pants and drinking cold(ish) beer while watching the finest derby on the planet.

We plan on showing up at ECDX in force, but that’ll only be the beginning.

I wanted to check in here and apologize for not being here recently. My desktop (where I keep the original and all subsequent zebras for the queue) has shit the bed. No POST codes, no nothing. The power button doesn’t even register anything.

Unfortunately, money’s a little tight, so, I won’t be able to update until I get the thing back up, so. There will have to be a hiatus for the time-being. I do appreciate the messages you all have sent me, and the suggestions, and I’ll make sure to make them when I can, but yeah. Thank you for following, and if you want to suggest things or shoot me a message, go ahead and hit the “ask” or “submit” buttons.

I just thought as someone who has 600+ followers now, that I have an obligation to let you all know what’s going on. Thank you for your patience. Love you all!

A new ref. Aww, isn’t it cute.

There’s a process by which a new ref, becomes a decent ref, becomes an awesome ref. But there are bumps along the way.

Target Confusion: This stage is the new ref. Forest for the trees issues. Oh god what is even happening oh what was that a penalty oh jes
Undercalling: Still a little unsure, but calling obvious majors and downgrading just about everything else to a minor/no-impact.
Overcalling: This ref is getting a little to big for the britches! This may be a breaking point! Sometimes a ref in this stage will burn out. But, keep calm. They may be calling too many penalties, or judging things too harshly, but there’s always that line-testing that they’ll get to. Just make sure they know what’s going on with their calls, and they’ll learn to take it to…
Awesome Official: Getting to the point where they will know, with certainty, about most, if not every, call. This is the golden, veteran state that all refs aspire to.

I guess the point of this post is to be patient with your trainees. Sometimes even people that have been around a while don’t remember the nuances of the rules. But! If you treat them right, and they have the right temperament. They will learn. And then you will have iron-clad refs.
